Originally, I had set out to write a set of short solo piano pieces based on a narrative I would draw across various mediums. I searched for photographs, sketches, paintings, sculpture, etc., and eventually stumbled across the works of Russian–Israeli artist Leonid Afremov. I was so enchanted by the evocative qualities of solitude and reflection that I shifted focus to his works exclusively.

The real beauty of these paintings, I think, is the open narrative he captures. Each painting seems to be a snapshot of one moment, where the backstory and future events are left up to the imagination. Because of this quality, a narrative through-line is fluid and easy to find. Of course, whether such a connection truly exists between paintings is Afremov’s secret.
